Bay Bound! The Expedition Chesapeake Journey Concludes

Watch new streaming videos of the team on Tangier Island, reflecting on Expedition Chesapeake:
Journey's End 1
Journey's End 2

"What a day, what a month, what an experience!" exults Eric Fitzgerald. "Expedition Chesapeake — an adventure of a lifetime!" Each of the 16 students had their own final thoughts on their Bay Bound adventure: Read their comments and view new photographs here, or read a wrapup article by CBF Education Vice President Don Baugh on the end of Expedition Chesapeake, with photographs from their Tangier Island welcome.
You can share the team's completed journey through the Bay Bound team's own journal entries and photographs: select the day you'd like to review from the list on the right. While the on-the-water part of their journey is over, these remarkable students already have their sights set on what’s next. They are planning a return celebration at the Rockingham County Fair, August 15-20. The public is encouraged to stop by the FFA display at the fair to visit with the team, hear firsthand about their experiences, and learn more about the connection between healthy farms and clean water. < Sign up for updates for this and other upcoming Expedition Chesapeake outreach events >
Using a sophisticated piece of water quality testing equipment supplied by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the students investigated connections between land use and water quality, testing and monitoring pollution levels, dissolved oxygen, biodiversity, and other indicators of ecosystem health. Take a look at the science questions and answers by our water quality experts.
L.L. Bean logo Developed in partnership with L.L. Bean, Expedition Chesapeake journeyed through the Potomac River Basin to the Chesapeake Bay. Sixteen students departed June 24th on a unique CBF educational journey — a month-long, 355 mile canoe/kayak journey down the Shenandoah and Potomac rivers; see map on "details" page. The students are all from Turner Ashby High School in Rockingham County, Virginia, each an active member of the National FFA Organization (FFA).*

Join CBF and support environmental education programs The Bay Bound students are all enrolled in Turner Ashby's Agriculture and Ecology Program and have been active participants in CBF's Chesapeake Classrooms program for more than two years. Chesapeake Classrooms is a partnership between CBF and the National Geographic Education Foundation that has students immersed in rigorous studies linking their local communities to the Chesapeake Bay. For more than 30 years, CBF’s award-winning environmental education programs have been a cornerstone of CBF’s efforts to improve water quality in the Chesapeake Bay and its rivers and streams. CBF, founded in 1967, is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization supported by contributions from philanthropic foundations, corporations, and more than 116,000 members nationwide — won't you please join CBF as a member? Your financial support is essential and supports environmental protection and restoration as well as outreach and education programs like Expedition Chesapeake.

* The National FFA Organization (FFA) was created in 1928 as Future Farmers of America, and is often still known as such; however, the name was changed in 1988 to represent the growing diversity of agriculture.

Final Words!

NOAA Chesapeake Bay Office logoNOAA has supplied a sophisticated piece of water quality testing equipment that will monitor much of the journey, beaming a signal to satellite. The fresh to salt water monitoring data will help describe the impact of pollution from local rivers and streams on the Chesapeake Bay. Dr. Laura Murray will be acting as the Bay Bound commentator on water quality — would you like to ask her a question?

The group recently coped with the departure of two key support staff: Click here to read "Expedition Chesapeake Goodbyes," with photographs and links to behind the scenes articles about the technology and food demands they've faced.
CBF Vice President of Education Don Baugh earlier visited the team on day four, and came back dazzled:
"It is clear that these students are stars."
Chesapeake Notebook, a regular feature of the CBF website, recounts
C.D. Dollar's experience accompanying Expedition Chesapeake on their first day.

Ask the Expedition Chesapeake team a Question!

CBF is creating a "virtual field trip," with the Bay Bound team answering a select number of questions each day from students and other website visitors. Submit your question today, or review the Q&A already completed!
